I use the mat in my home office on a thick carpet. It not only protects the carpet, but provides a smooth rolling surface for my office chair. I went to a lot of effort and expense to decorate my office, and a utilitarian but ugly chair mat wouldn't do. The bamboo mat is functional and beautiful and complements my Asian-themed decor perfectly.
