I have never owned a laser printer. The sales clerk helped me tremdously on this one! I am so glad I didn't decide on another ink jet! This is so much better. If you only want to print mainly documents in black and white, this is the one for you! Dollar for dollar you will save money..toner cartridges cost a little more than ink jet, but in the long run it will pay off!

This is a great printer for the price. I got an instant rebate and got it for $150, which is a great buy. I like laser printers far better than ink jet - low cost per page since ink jet cartridges are so expensive. Ink Jets are cheap to buy but expensive to maintain. Once you have to buy a few cartridges, you'll see the difference. Replacement laser toner cartridge for this Brother costs $68. This printer is smooth in operation, sleek footprint, quiet and print and scan quality is excellent for text documents (not so good for pictures and graphics). Set up to join network wirelessly was pretty straightforward, but entering your password was a bit annoying since you have to use "up and down arrows" to scroll through the entire alphabet for each character. My password has 8 characters so it takes a while and then it "blocks out" the characters after you enter them. You'd better remember what you entered or you'll mess this up easily. A bit tedious and surely could have been conceived better. The absolute WORST part of this was getting my computer to "recognize" this printer and to allow it to wirelessly hook up to it. The directions in the manual for this are completely useless and aggravating because their process simply does not work at all. I hooked up a Mac and even though Brother gives directions specifically for this, they were completely wrong and of no value whatsoever. I was about to take this printer back or call customer support when I figured it out on my own - the only reason I could figure it out is because I know something about Mac computers. Why can't companies write instructions for the average person instead of making it for a computer programmer? Anyway, once I got it working, it works great. They obviously need someone who knows something about Macs to write their instructions. Don't know if their Windows directions are just as useless. Only other criticism is regarding the copy machine cover - it is pretty flimsy - looks like it won't last very long.

I'm running the printer wireless. Unfortunately, the wireless setup was not completely wireless and the only way I could get it to work was to connect the device to my laptop via USB cable (which I had by chance). However, once setup, wireless printing has been extremely stable. Waking up from sleep is very quick, and I don't find the printing/copying too terribly loud. Single-sided printing is very fast, but I love the auto-duplex printing feature! Have also used the scanner, and it works well. This does have the ability to scan multiple pages into one .pdf, but, admittedly, it's not straightforward to find the enable feature for this.

after extensive research on the black and white printers I settled on the Brother over the Canon,
a close second. Both seem to be rated equally. The lower sale price was the determining factor . It is too early to tell about ink consumtion or reliability, It does take up significant space, as published. would recommend to others.

We all LOVE this printer, it is like a small version of an office printer. I like the idea that I can copy, and scan, plus print all I want. I have always had ink jet printers, but the ink woul run out pretty fast, and that was generally about $30 plus for each cartridge. This Laser last much longer, I only have the black but it is worth it for the value of the type of printer. LASER FOR NOW ON!!!
My son got His Laser printer at Staples about two years ago, really LOVES it, and had incouraged us to buy one long ago. He has used his alot and is only on His second cartridge. This is proff thay last a long time, and He prints alot. Laser is the way to go. THANKS STAPLES for all your help.

The initial ink that came with the unit was used up faster than fast. I've just loaded a new cartridge for high volume - been thru about 250 pages and no ink change yet - I'm doing about 1000 pages a week. just better be good.
