Printer is noisy.

Starter cartridge good for 700 pages is a nasty touch. Tape over the lens into the cartridge to get more pages. This works for all Brother laser printers.

The CD included didn't have current Mac drivers. Amazing, because the Mac drivers are open-source, CUPS drivers.

Speed and clarity are fine.

I'm disappointed in this as compared to previous Brother printers. I note that my local store does not carry replacement toner or drums. Perhaps it is a use-once-and-throw-away product.

I bought it because I needed a printer on the weekend for a rush project. The drum on my existing printer died and the local store did not have a replacement in stock.

This will work great for printing black and white documents quick and simple. The printer itself has no LCD display or anything to manage settings with like other home printers, so if something goes wrong you'll have to figure it out based on a couple status lights (a key to decipher those lights IS included, though). So just be aware, troubleshooting might require a little more knowledge about printers, since it won't really hold your hand.

That said, so far it has been reliable. It hasn't jammed, it uses toner instead of ink so it's highly cost-effective per print and it is a cheap little printer. Works perfectly for what I need it for.

Don't get this if you want to print color, probably not the best for black and white images either - it is clearly intended for documents.

I've used Brother's monochrome laser printers for several years. In my opinion, they offer the best balance of performance and affordability. Toner expense is acceptable (at least as well as any other brand....better than xerox). Although the printer initially gives the impression of being "all plastic" and is very light, I've yet to kill one. My only real complaint is that Brother takes the cheap road of shorting you the USB cable. I realize that allows for a slightly lower cost, but I would be happy to pay $5 more for the printer and not have to worry about remembering to pick up the cable.

If you want a no-frills printer - only prints in black, does not copy or fax, this is perfect. The price was right and the toner is available in regular and long-lasting. Kind of noisy while warming up but that doesn't take long.
