I had an Epson Aculaser CX11NF, which died of old age. I got this Brother thinking it had the same high quality, same features. I became quite sad. The quality is very low, not good for photos, barely good enough for basic office color docs. Toner runs out FAST! To replace one color, you have to take all cartridges out and clean all wires. Otherwise, machine works fine. I wouldn't recommend it because the quality is too low. I was very disappointed, probably should've returned it.

From the minute this 50-60 lb. gargantuan arrived, it was too late to return it. I'm ecologically-minded, so I converted the box it came in, into a small storage shed for my garage. There was no choice. Either you turn the box on its side and slide the thing out, turn it right side up and then straight lift it to a counter OR, you straight lift it from the box while it sits on the counter and while the thing is in your hands and in the air, slap shoot the box out of the way and lower the monster to the counter.

THAT or you have to get a second person to help out. I know. All you guys who hang at the gym swear you set up this thing alone and easily, but I'd bet a lot of you really razored the box down the sides and slid it out onto the corner.

Once you've done all this, it makes it mentally and physically unlikely you'll return it. Why would I think to return it? It does do everything it proposes in the ads except for that REAR FEED for envelopes thing, but what bothers me is that the whole market in copiers and printers avoids the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

Why, why do you have to charge $70-$100 for a cartridge when you've made enough money of the frontside of this deal by charging almost $600 for the machine? (You don't have to go to Harvard B-School to know you give away the "razor" and let the customer spend a lifetime buying your "razor blades").

Why, in this age of the 99% righteously complaining about being taken advantage of, does your company have to stick it to us (and I'd guess most of us who actually buy the machines and the cartridges on our credit cards are not the 1%) on the front-end and back-end?

The final straw was when I had one big job after another requiring just black print. There is some counter in this machine that counts copies, and doesn't discern color vs B/W, and when I used up the black ink cartridge, the three color cartridges declared themselves used up. I actually replaced them in addition to a new black cartridge in order to get my job done. I couldn't get another printer or seemingly, get Brother to help me fix this printer, in the time I had. Then, I had to replace all the color cartridges again, in order to fulfill my jobs on time.

There is a setting somewhere on this thing where I stated I wanted all B/W printing, but I can't see where that is respected. I was told that all colors were used to made black print, not just the black cartridge.

Also, ask the company what the industry standard is for "page of print". I couldn't believe it when I was told it was the amount of black print, not on a full page of print, but that of ONE paragraph of approximately 140 characters. Are you kidding? That cuts down the touted 500 pages of print per cartridge to what I would consider about 125 pages of print.

I read the regular User's Manual and the Advanced User's Manual. No mention is made, that I can see, that would allow me to just use the black cartridge, but if there is, I'll just have a whole stack of color cartridges for that future job needing them. I've asked the company. No answer.

If I get a sufficient answer, and the company help quickly and easily solves the problem, I'll rewrite this review. I've used Brother MFC for ages and loved them. Please prove me wrong.

Unfortunately, what I'm getting is fear of touching this machine. It's like the hotel room mini-bar of unsuspecting expense. So, if you think of this machine as being economical, my question in the title of this review is answered. Someone else is paying for your cartridges, not you.

I have always owned HP products but have recently been experiencing more problems that usual. I was told Brother is the way to go. This printer was easy to set up and start using. We do a lot of two sided printing and copying in our office. It does both very quickly and clearly. Right now, I feel like this was good decision. Will wait to see how long toner cartridges last...

I bought this to replace a Dell that was dying and that I hated. This printer makes the worst photos I've ever seen. From both a mac and a PC platform. Even simple bar graphs are unimpressive with a grey shadow around them.

I bought this printer after dumping money into a really great but really expensive Sharp brand printer. I've had a brother fax for years without any problem and once I had to call customer support and they were fantastic where Sharp fails miserably. So, because of this and reliability, I went and bought the Brother printer and although I've only had for about a week, I love it so far. Very easy setup in my office and the best thing is that I downloaded a Brother app and now I can print wirelessly from my Ipad! Ink appears to be quite expensive so I hope mine lasts a while.
