How Does a Cashier Register Work?

Cash registers are devices that help cashiers quickly complete retail transactions. A cashier register's primary function is calculating the difference between the value of the products purchased and the cash received, so the cashier knows how much change to give back to the customer.

Registers are connected to cash drawers called tills that organize and secure the money throughout the shift. After the transaction is complete, the register will automatically print a receipt of the transaction, usually on POS paper, for the customer's record. Many modern registers can also process debit card and credit card transactions.

What Features Do Cash Register Machines Have?

Many cash register machines have features that go above and beyond calculating transactions and printing receipts. Today’s registers often include helpful features that assist with other day-to-day tasks, such as price lookups and tax computation. Some cash till machines even work with your accounting and finance software to accomplish more advanced tasks. Learn more about the different features cash registers have below:

  • Digital displays: Cash registers with large digital displays make each transaction easier by giving cashiers a full view of what the customer is buying. Previously, registers were unable to show more than one line of information on the screen, making it challenging to keep up with large orders containing numerous products.
  • Department and price look-up: Most cash registers feature software that allows stores to sort the prices of hundreds of products into a database of different departments. This software makes it possible for cashiers to scan barcodes and know the cost of each product. It also makes it easier for cashiers to perform price lookups.
  • Accounting software compatibility: Some advanced cash registers enable store owners to link their preferred accounting software to the POS system to print different financial reports and statements.

What Types of Cash Registers Are There?

There are two main types of POS cash registers. The single-display model has a single screen that faces the cashier, showing prices and SKUs. Dual-display registers have this screen and a second screen that the customer can view. Single-display models are a convenient option for those who use registers for occasional transactions and back-office work. The dual-display cash register is optimal for busy retail stores since it lets customers immediately catch price discrepancies and keep track of their totals.
