I use the printer daily, and the cartridges are very easy to replace. They aren't cheap, but I have never found any that were not. Tried with my last printer to use the refills, but sensors did not work, and quality was not the same.
I like purchasing the cartridges at Staples, as their prices are usually less, and then bring them back in for the Staples Rewards. That adds up.
I wish that once a cartridge ran out, it would still be able to print, but if one goes, you are stuck until you replace the cartridge.

Along with the other four colors and the black ink cartridge it is obvious that you "own me" as the printer is worthless without the ink. It's a "sick" shame that they are so over priced. One would think that after all of these years of being on the market that you would have amortized your costs by now and could see your way clear to begin giving some relief to the public. However, I suppose that is out of the question. Your only saving grace is that the Artisan 837 does make acceptable personal photographs. I'll give you that. Joe Westbrook

        I bougut an Epson Artisan 837 all-in-one printer which I like very much. The quality of all functions is very good. I like to pring a fairly large amount of photos for myself & to give to others. The greatest drawback for this printer, is its ink cartridges and photo paper. This printer will ONLY sucessfully use Epson ink & photo paper.
        I am very disappointed that neither the ink cartridges nor the photo paper EVER go on sale as do other brands. The 5 ink cartrieges run out of ink at different times, thus forcing me to buy more expensive single cartridge replacements than if I could buy the multi-pack of ink.

        I have been told that this issue is controlled by Epson, not by the stores that sell the products. Probably when this printer dies, I would return to HP. It is more simple with tri color and black cartridges. Also the HP can use other brands of photo paper which go on sale from time to time. The quality of prints is just as good. I have NEVER seen any Epson product on sale. I have bought in the past the most expensive Kodak photo paper which I buy when it is buy one get one free.
