Comments about Garmin GPS Systems; nvi 40:
The main reason I went with the 40LM was the pricing and the lifetime map updates. There are a couple extra steps they threw in as you put in your address, I am guessing they are just to help confirm the address. All in all it is a much needed improvment from my '09 model Garmin.
I hate it!

I am a livery driver - this is my third Garmin (they only last about a year!). I hate it....it gives directions that send me all over the place to get from one point to a short distance away. Also doesn't say "recalculating" so I know I've taken a wrong turn. I brought it back!
Garmin is a great buy.

About Me Casual/ Recreational
The garmin gets you there everytime. I have no problem entering the addresses and then retrieving them when I need them. We travel to Chicago on occation so it is nice to have the lane views so we have plenty of time to get over to that lane in heavy traffic. The speed limit indicator helps keep us from getting a fine for speeding. It constantly reminds us how fast we should be going right on the screen. The larger screen is easy to see while driving. The lifetime maps is a great feature because roads are constantly changeing. Our old Garmin didn't have a new bridge in it that could save us time on our trips. Now we will be able to update 4 times a year to make sure we are able to travel efficiently.
Basic, but seems reliable

As a late adopter, this is my first GPS, so I don't have any to compare it too other than my iPhone and Google Maps. I would like it to have an easy way to preview the directions it creates, since I have seen others who didn't double check their GPS routes and ended up going the long way around rather than taking advantage of a shortcut. In installed a lot of voice options, falsely believing that I'd get English directions with non-English accents. Now I've found that these additions used up lots of memory, and, as I should have guessed, they are actually speaking a foreign language. Shame on me for my ethnocentric audacity. I'm taking a 1500 mile trip soon and so that will be the true test of the equipment. Then, I'll see if I can reset the thing and free up the space. Regarding the Internet interface, I'm sure that there are some systems out there that let you plan and plot your trip using the computer keyboard and then export it to the GPS. I would find that to be preferable to the touch screen interface this Garmin has.

Garmin 40LM

About Me Beginner
Once I found the time to install this device, I found that the directions were pretty self explanatory. The parts I was having difficulty with were easily and quickly remedied with a simple call to the manufacturer help line. The representative was attentive and helpful. One of the features I like that is better than my old GPS is the fact that it keeps track of the current speed limit on the road being traveled. The only thing confusing was the literature that stated I would get a free map upgrade if I registered the product within a certain number of days...the product comes with free lifetime map upgrades...so what's this all about?

Got it as present for my wife. She is not the patient type, but had no complaints or issues with this unit.
Like the Garmin GPS

I had bought a Garmin GPS a few years ago and had no problem except it cost a lot to do the upgrades. I bought this Garmin at the same price it would have cost for upgrades on the other Garmin. This Garmin has few updates for as long as you have the GPS.
Love it!

This is a great gps with clear directions both in audio and on the screen. I was able to make it all the way through the tunnels under the river in Boston without it loosing its signal! My old unit shut down about 1/4 way through. This unit has a nice feature that my old one did not in taht it shows the given sppeed limit for the road your are travelling on and the speed you are actually travelling. I drive like an old lady but for my husnband this should be a good reminder to take his foot of the gas once in a while!
