Comments about Martin Yale® Deluxe Autofolder & Accessories; Deluxe AutoFolder, 16Hx15Wx30D:

I've had 30 years of experience with paper handling equipment. Every machine that I am familiar with must be set up properly to work well. Changes in paper quality and humidity will make adjustments necessary. Machines that are set up manually (most folders under $1000) require careful attention to get the best results. Reviews of professional paper folders are nearly all good because they are operated by professionals. Reviews of 'small business' folders typically have a few 4 or 5 star reviews and a lot of 1 star reviews (5 stars from experienced users and 1 star from people who don't generally get along well with machines). I understand how frustrating it is when a machine keeps jamming and you can't just flip open a cover and remove the jam. It is especially frustrating when YOU are always the one who has trouble; I have helped many, many people like that.
Friction feed paper folders are mostly of the 'buckle' type; the paper is jammed into the stops (that you've set) on the fold tables and buckles. The buckle is gripped by spinning rolls and pulled in the opposite direction to crease the fold and move the paper along. If a second fold is required the process is repeated, usually on the opposite side of the machine. Adjusting input guides crooked or variations in paper or humidity cause jams; a crooked buckle will be grabbed at one end; paper that is slipperier may not buckle; this causes a jam. Paper folders are one of the most finicky paper handling machines because of their basic, necessary, design.
Make yourself some accurate setup templates out of mat board; a little larger than each job that you will be running. Lay the template in the input tray and tighten both guides against the template. Do the same for the fold tables, but make the template exact; this allows changing between jobs in seconds.
Run a few sheets through after setting the fold tables to the manufacturers pre-marked lines. Move the first table stop in if the fold is too far from the top of the paper. Run another couple of sheets. After the first fold is accurate adjust the second table based on where the second fold is in relationship to the first fold; if it is too close move the second fold table out a bit. Use a square piece of mat board to make certain that the stops are square.
If your folder requires feathering, do it evenly; if it requires a square face make sure that the documents in the input tray are absolutely square before you press start.
Stacking will be adversely affected by low humidity. You can try grounding the output trays but it is the documents themselves that have the static buildup. The whole stack of folded documents will act like an accordion spring and repel the next document coming from the folder. Press stop, remove the output and start again. No machine that 'shoots the output' into a tray will perform well when humidity is low. Machines that have output conveyors (over $1000) do better in low humidity.
Smooth finished documents in heavier weights provide a challenge for all friction feed machines regardless of price. If the job is small (a few hundred sheets) try feeding your job one page at a time. Hand feeding documents into a continuously running feed tray works once you get used to it; faster than hand folding and easier on your hands.
You can stretch the limit of your machine by keeping the rollers clean. If it can fold three sheets of 20 lb. paper, than it should be able to fold a sheet of 60 lb. paper. Heavy stock doesn't fold well by hand either; we've found that quality brochure paper makes an elegant half fold program booklet, even though it is much thinner than card stock. All we use card stock for is postcards and covers.
Clean the rollers according to the user manual using roller cleaner. Don't use denatured alcohol; it will damage rubber and plastic feed tires. Glazed tires can be improved with household vinegar (slightly acetic) or scuffed up using Scotch Brite. Vacuum and wipe up dust and cleaning fluid.

Comments about Martin Yale® Deluxe Autofolder & Accessories; Deluxe AutoFolder, 16Hx15Wx30D:

The machine was easy to set up and is easy to use. I have had other folders and would rate this one equal to a more expensive Martin-Yale folder that we had in the past. The folder has an adequate folding speed and have not had any problems with paper jambs.
