Two gone bad in matter of days

Comments about NETGEAR® Firewalls; ProSafe® VPN Firewall with 8-ports GB:

I purchased this unit a couple weeks ago. After trying to configure the device all was good. These devices are sent with out of date firmware. I have to flash the firmware to get this device up to date. I then went to the settings page to obtain an ip address from the ISP. After that the device would lock up. One of my computers in our network would not hold a valid IP address. All IP addresses were the good ole 169. ip address. After a couple hours on the phone with netgear they informed me the unit was bad.

netgear fire wall

Comments about NETGEAR® Firewalls; ProSafe® VPN Firewall with 8-ports GB:

I purchased this from my local staples store because the sonic wall unit I had was causing the internet to go down. The new unit I purchased is now working fine. My main frustration with the netgear firewall was the trouble I had installing and configuring it. I did nor have a problem understanding or following the instructions provided by Netgear, I apparently had othert network issues. It would have been nice (with staples having a "tech" department to provide an 800 number to try to assist customers with thses items. I ended up calling a local computer service to configure the unit, and they were quick to point out why I should have bought the unit from them.

Great entry level business VPN router

Comments about NETGEAR® Firewalls; ProSafe® VPN Firewall with 8-ports GB:

The Netgear Prosafe is just what the small business (home office) needs to add wireless "N" and gigabit ethernet behind a commercial cable modem. We needed to be able to support remote access via ipsec VPN, and the SSL support is a plus. The VPN Wizard simplifies setup and the Greenbow based client is very straightforward.

Comments about NETGEAR® Firewalls; ProSafe® VPN Firewall with 8-ports GB:

Purchased this to replace an older Netgear VPN router with 2 VPN tunnels in it. Even after upgrading the firmware I could not the VPN setup to allow all the needed connections. Replaced it with a Cisco 800 series router, although its a lot more money it works.

Comments about NETGEAR® Firewalls; ProSafe® VPN Firewall with 8-ports GB:

My whole office was in despair not knowing what was needed to get my office up and running. I had to get a tech person to figure out what was going on. Before he came I had called Cablevision to help with the situation. Stayed on the phone for almost 1 hour to find out that there was something not working right with the Netgear. My tech came in, checked all the wiring in my office and upon process of elimination he determined that I had an old Netgear and was not functioning to the fullest extent. I then purchased this unit from Staples and sure enough that was the problem.

Comments about NETGEAR® Firewalls; ProSafe® VPN Firewall with 8-ports GB:

I purchased this unit as it indicated it had a firewall as part of the software and would allow me to use this in my home office business without my neighbors piggybacking on my internet hub. I was also very anxious about setting up the wireless hub as it appeared to be very difficult. I was mistaken on both items. I attempted to set up a firewall with a secure password for this unit but was unable to locate instructions on how to make it secure. It installed with absolutely great instructions and immediately we were able to wirelessly access the high speed internet feeding the house. I would recommend this installation to anyone moderately able to understand network environments.

Comments about NETGEAR® Firewalls; ProSafe® VPN Firewall with 8-ports GB:

This is a great router to have for extra capabilities. I bought it for the extra wired ports (previous one only had four) and the firewall capabilities. The GigE speed ports was bonus. So far, so good after a few months of full time use with five PCs, a network hard drive and a network printer.
If you want to move up into the next level of equipment for your home, this is a good second level from standard home user equipment. It is intended for small business use, but works well for those of us that have a few extra PCs. :)
The firewall capabilities work well. I haven't had a chance to use the VPN features yet.
The only con I had was going from Linksys to NetGear. The interface is quite different and the layout of this particular model is different again from home units. Moving to this model will require more networking knowledge and skill than the average home user. And, calling support doesn't get you any better first line experience that I could tell as they seem more familiar with the home units than the small business units.
