Spill kits as part of standard supplies
Medical practices keep spill kits on hand not only because they’re required to but also because accidental discharges of blood and bodily fluids are always a risk. Some workplaces, such as factories, may also be prone to discharges from accidents. Accidents can happen in office settings as well, so it’s essential that all workplace settings keep discharge containment kits on hand as part of their office cleaning supplies.
Comprehensive spill kits
Medical practices and at-risk workplaces must have an infection control regimen in place to clean up, disinfect, and sterilize areas in case of accidents to patients or employees. At a minimum, a comprehensive discharge containment kit should include the following:
- Antiseptic towelettes and germicidal wipes or cloths
- Disposable gowns, shoe covers, exam-grade gloves, face masks, and ear-loop eye shields
- Fluid control solidifiers or powder, and bio-hazard scoop
- Bio-hazard bags, clear plastic bags, and twist ties
Comprehensive kits normally contain an ample supply of each of these items so that multiple personnel can help in the clean-up process if necessary.
Emergency discharge containment kits
In commercial settings, first-aid kits are one of the health care supplies that offices or stores must keep on hand for emergencies. A spill kit should be a necessary first-aid complement in case an accident involves the discharge of blood or bodily fluids, before professional cleaning crews or even 911 personnel can get on site. At a minimum, an emergency kit should contain hand gloves and a face mask, disinfectants and germicidal clean-up cloths, no-rinse hand gel, and bags for disposing of any waste. Just as important, an emergency discharge containment kit should contain explicit instructions, in both English and Spanish, for dealing with spills as a nonprofessional.

Immediate access to kits is always necessary. Many of the comprehensive kits come in wall-mounted units that can be available to responsible personnel on demand. Emergency kits come in cases that are compact enough to fit in desk drawers or health supply containers.
