We use these for automobile key tags to record the customer's name & vehicle type, so we were not happy to discover that one side of the tag is a gloss finish that is hard to write on with a pen or pencil.

These merchandise tags are actually 1-1/2" x 15/16" instead of the advertised 1-1/2"x1". That would be fine if I were writing on them with a pen, but I'm using Avery 1-1/2"x1" labels, and they hang off the end of the tag. Quill is taking these back, and has said they'll change the catalog and web listings. You can't ask for more than that (except I wish they did carry a 1-1/2"x1" tag). I'd recommend these to a friend who was going to write on them and not use labels.
