Coin counters as an essential business tool
Retail and commercial business use coin sorters as one of many bank supplies to organize and expedite their cash-handling needs, also including cash registers, cash boxes, and deposit bags. The sorters stack quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies into separate tubes with specific coin-wrap denomination totals. The sorters make it easier for retail and commercial business to reconcile their daily cash-drawer intake against cash register receipts at the close of business. The counters work in conjunction with digital cash counters that tally paper currency for close-of-business reconciliation. Both currency and coin-counting machines normally have digital read-outs that display total cash tallies, and several are able to print out the amounts for use with internal audits or as tax documentation.
Basic features of coin sorters
Most machines for sorting and stacking coins are electric, many with LED read-out displays. The top of the machines contain coin hoppers, with capacities for between 200 and 800 coins at a time. The machines also have 1 or 4 stacking tubes for each coin denomination, with the multi-tube machines equipped with automatic row advancement after a tube reaches its denomination. Some machines have an additional tube slot for half-dollar coins. The machines stack coins quickly, from 156 up to 312 coins each minute. Manual stacking machines are also available, many consisting of trays with coin-specific slotted rows, each slot offset from the next so that it holds five coins apiece, with graduated denominations up to each coin’s total wrapper amount. Other manual coin counting machines have hand-cranking mechanisms for shooting the coins into removable tubes.
Arranging coins for bank deposit or cash drawers
Making bank deposits of coins or arranging coins for cash-drawer stocking requires preparing coin rolls with denominations listed clearly on the side of each coin roll wrapper. The electric and manual coin counters facilitate this process in one of three ways:
- Rigid, pre-formed coin wrappers fit inside the tubes and fill up automatically.
- Removable tubes easily slide the coins into flexible wrappers.
- Five-coin stacks on manual sorters are easy to grab for manual wrapping.
When commercial businesses use coin rolls along with color-coded money bands for wrapping paper currency in 50 to 1,000-dollar increments, they have the sum total of all cash transactions that they can carry with them in deposit bags for their banking transactions.
