Flu Season Information Center

Germs you should know.

There are 3 viruses that commonly cause illness in your office – rhinovirus, influenza and norovirus.

Rhinoviruses cause 30-50% of all common colds. They also are known to cause more cases of human illness than any other infectious agent. Adults contract a cold on average 4 to 6 times per year. Symptoms include runny nose, congestion, sore throat, headache and cough. These symptoms usually occur within 2 to 3 days of infection and last between 2 to 14 days. The best treatment is rest and staying hydrated.

Influenza is an extremely contagious respiratory illness that affects up to 20% of Americans every year. The symptoms are similar to those brought on by the rhinovirus, but end up being more severe. They include fever, body aches, extreme fatigue and dry cough.

Norovirus is highly contagious and is known to cause sudden nausea, vomiting and intestinal distress that can last up to 2 days. It causes a large percentage of nonbacterial gastroenteritis outbreaks throughout the United States and the world.

All of these viruses can be spread by touching the mouth, nose or eyes after coming into contact with an infected person or a contaminated surface. Research has shown that these viruses can survive for several hours in some cases even days. The norovirus can live for up to 12 days on a contaminated surface! Be prepared for cold and flu season with supplies that prevent the spread of germs.
