While most businesses were historically owned and run by men, times have changed. Today, there are roughly 11.6 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. These businesses employ nearly 9 million people and generate more than $1.7 trillion in revenue. Additionally, women-owned businesses comprise 39 percent of the business population. While the overall national growth rate for all businesses was 44 percent between 1997 and 2017, the growth rate for women-owned businesses was more than 2.5 times that (at 114 percent).
