Fax machines are dedicated devices for sending information securely over telephone lines rather than through computer via internet protocols that may be subject to hacking or malware. Faxes also double as printers and copiers, many using laser and inkjet systems for sharp, saturated monochrome text. Faxes also provide a versatile telephone system, with answering and speaker-phone capabilities. Read More

Fax machines for security

Although many companies rely on email systems for communicating with clients and customers, many choose fax communications for their more secure mode of transmitting sensitive information without full end-to-end email encryption technology. In fact, many government standards encourage the use of telephone-line, non-wireless fax machines, particularly for confidential banking and healthcare information.

The versatility of fax machines

Dedicated fax systems include both single-sided and duplex printing and reproduction functions, largely with monochrome output. Companies that don’t need sophisticated, high-end printers to support their workloads should look into fax machines with traditional thermal-print technology, with chemically coated paper in which print is heat-transferred onto the surface. Printer fax machines also come with both inkjet and laser technology for printing on plain bond paper. They are an ideal cost-saving alternative to dedicated inkjet and laser printers for offices that require basic monochrome printing services with good resolutions of up to 600 x 600 dpi. Many of today’s fax systems also have scanning capabilities. Fax machines give workplaces full document-handling functionality, without requiring separate printers, copiers, or scanners.

Information transmission capabilities

Fax systems send and receive documents using modems connected directly to telephone lines, greatly speeding up transmission, many times up to 33.6 kps. Integrated memory hardware of between 16 and 64MB also lets you queue up and broadcast transmissions to hundreds of recipients at a time, programmable for any time of the day and including auto-dialing functionality. Many also let you scan documents simultaneously as you send faxes, or use the fax system’s USB port for peripheral devices, including transferring detailed fax files onto travel drives for print out with high-end devices like HP wireless printers.

The telephone capabilities of non-wireless fax machines

Small offices can use a fax system for a dedicated telephone service. Fax machines offer answering systems with TAD connections, speed-dial settings for up to 30 or more calling numbers, and conference-call speaker systems. You can receive and make calls while you receive and send faxes, and you can use your smartphone to manage your faxes remotely away from the workplace.
