Types of office accent lighting

There are several types of options when it comes to office accent lighting. This type of light directs beams to specific areas. The most common type is the torchiere, which points light upward toward the ceiling, where it spreads out. Torchiere lamps light up a large area of the room. Down bridge lamps do the opposite, sending light downwards. Use these lamps to help brighten up reading areas. Dual torch and down bridge lamps have two lamps in one that offer lighting in both directions for full coverage. For lighting that is subtle, consider tower lamps. These sculpture-like lamps look like works of art and provide just enough light for an ambient feel.

Different floor lamp features

Whether choosing a floor lamp for a home office or place of business, there are several different features or lighting accessories that affect use.

• Three-way, six-way, or dimmer lamps allow users to adjust the amount of light
• Height adjusters allow the lamp to be raised or lowered
• Some lamps have built-in tables on which to set cups or magazines
• Swing arm lamps can be moved around to light up different areas

Choosing a lamp shade

Users might want to change up the look of a light with a new shade. Shape is important when choosing a lamp shade. Opt for a round shade that matches a round floor lamp. If the office has a black floor lamp, then consider a colored lamp shade for a contrasting look. Shades with tassels provide an elegant look, and stained glass covers create a rainbow light affect on the walls. The slant measurement of the shade should be 30 to 40 percent of the height of the lamp from the base for a balanced appearance. For width, make sure the shade sides sit at least 3 inches from the light bulb to prevent burning.
