These are meant to replace traditional fluorescent tubes, and operate off the existing fluorescent ballasts. The Philips 473934 is compatible with Instant Start, Programmed Start, Dimmable, and Emergency ballasts eliminating the need for rewiring. This allows the fixture to maintain its original UL compliance. This Philips bulb is Mercury Free, and comes on instantly with no flicker or buzz.
