The DeskJet 2542 gets the best out of its cartridges
The model 2542 ink cartridges, as with most HP printer cartridges, contain memory chips that enable them to respond to printer output commands. DeskJet 2542 ink cartridges work in tandem with the printer to support fast print speeds of 20 pages per minute (ppm) in black, and 16 ppm in color in draft-print mode. Draft mode is one of five resolution settings that the printer instructs its cartridges to yield in ink output. The cartridges can also print in normal mode with a resolution of 600 x 300 dots per inch (dpi), in plain-best (text and graphics) and photo-best modes with a 600 x 600 dpi resolution, and in max-dpi mode for high-end photo ready color presentations with a 4800 x 1200 dpi resolution. In addition, the cartridges work in unison to create monochrome renderings in both black and tricolor greyscale output using the max-dpi resolution mode.
DeskJet 2542 ink cartridges support high-end business document output
Although the HP 61 cartridges print crisp black text and vibrant colors on plain media, like multipurpose or copy paper, they excel at printing on media that businesses need for presenting their enterprise and marketing content. The dual-cartridge system prints high-quality output on bright-white paper for final report text and graphics, on heavy, two sided matte and semi-gloss presentation paper for report covers, on two sided matte and glossy paper for brochures, mailers, and calendars, and on matte, semi-gloss, and glossy photo paper for lab quality photographs. The print system can also print iron-on transfers for light or white fabrics such as T-shirts.

Many ink and toner cartridges come in condensed ink compositions while still fitting the designated cartridge reservoirs of specific printers. The HP 2540 printer accommodates three versions each of the black and tricolor cartridges, with contents that produce different per-cartridge page yields:
